I was literally just discussing this with a friend. We are both American. Shes relatively fit and I'm overweight. We work with a bunch of Chinese women who are already thin. But they talk shit about us all the time and are obsessed with being even thinner. I don't understand it. How do you go from starving 60 years ago to intentionally starving yourself and thinking nothing of it?

They'll definitely get fatter but they'll never rival America. Compare Europe and Japan to America. All three regions have been wealthy and developed for an extended amount of time but the difference in fat levels is pretty stark with Europe being in the middle of the pack. I'd wager a richer more developed China would fall somewhere between Europe and Japan rather than approaching American levels. The East Asian culture of shame is great for keeping people watching their weight. At least for women that's definitely the case.
