China unveils MAJOR new aircraft carrier amid fears of rising tensions in South China Sea
CHINA has unveiled its newest ultra-modern aircraft carrier, cementing the nation's position as a military superpower and raising fears over escalating tensions between its neighbours in the disputed South China Sea.

The 70,000-tonne Type 001A CV-17 vessel is a reverse-engineered ship, and much more powerful version of China's other aircraft carrier, the Soviet-built Liaoning Type 001 CV-16.

The ship is now expected to be taken to a designated testing zone in the Bohai Sea for further trials, an area designated as a "no go zone" until April 28.

Military expert, Song Zhongping, commented on the upcoming tests, saying: "The first sea trials of China's second aircraft carrier, built at the Dalian shipyard, are likely to take place in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea to test its power and design.
"After the sea trial, which normally takes about 6-12 months, it will be ready for delivery to the PLA Navy, so it's very likely we will see the carrier enlisted by the end of 2018."

China bought their older aircraft carrier, Liaoning, from Ukraine in 1998

Hu Wenming, the project's General Manager, also commented on the testing phase, saying: "The steam turbines of Type001A will all start to formally enter the mooring test phase, which will be ahead of our schedule in overall progress.
"Before we deliver the ship, we also need to do a variety of systematic tests at sea, including matching tests of carrier-based aircraft, weapon systems and others."

The hull of the ship was launched in the Dalian shipyard last April, and it has since been undergoing further tests and developments.

China now has two operational aircraft carriers after the nation surprised the world by unveiling its first vessel, Liaoning, in 2012.

China invested a lot of money on A2/AD weapons which target carrier groups inside their expanding ring of bases, so they have to have a reason to build a class of larger carriers capable of sustained out of hemisphere operations. Their fleet is just as vulnerable from the same threats far from home, but they lack America's elaborate supply chain network. Strategically, these medium carriers seem more likely to challenge India and their close regional neighbors than the US fleet, which will continue to evolve as China catches up.

They don't need to be that big. Just look at what happened to the British at Suez. It was the point the UK ceased to be a great power (or at least proved it was no longer one). The US used its financial power over the UK to break the British and force defeat. China is positioning itself financially to be able to assert financial pressures on many Western countries, including the US. There will come a point it can crash the economy of the US without a bullet being fired.

I think the real issue is that China gets more bang for its buck as American costs are so high. Of course China will become the preeminent world power. It's inevitable. In the long run 1.4 Billion people will have greater force and economic might than 400 Million.

Rather better organised than the UK that increasingly looks overseas to purchase technology. Though pioneers in computing there is no big UK computing company apart from ARM (now owned by Japanese), the UK now is unable to build even a train, again supplied by the Japanese, Italians etc. China does have big indigenous IT companies and they're able to build trains.

Just the reality, interestingly it looks like China will have the first EPR nuclear reactor operational in the world (Taishan 1), not Europe.

Why the hell wouldn't you reverse engineer an existing tried and tested design? It's a floating airfield, not an iPhone. You don't honestly think the new British carriers were designed from scratch do you? They will have been based on an existing design, probably the American carriers.

China builds most of the worlds shipping. It's quite capable of making a ship that lasts. In this case they've used an old soviet design, so it will be easy to maintain and will last forever.

Wouldn't the vast amounts of money spent on this stuff be better spent elsewhere, cleaning its rivers and pollution in general, maybe invent a free energy alternative to fossil fuels.

State of the art? The F35 first flew in October 2000. It had to be tested for the millennium bug. By the time it enters service it will be over 20 years old.
And the version we are buying for the UK carriers doesn't work properly and never will... the lift fan is where the weapons bay is supposed to be, so bombs have to go on the outside, rendering the stealth features useless and limiting the top speed.
Britains old aircraft carriers and the upgraded harriers were better than the stuff we are replacing them with, which were only ordered to make work for a shipyard near Gordon Browns constituency.

Wrong it first flew in 2006. The F35B is in service with the US Marines and is performing well. It also keeps its weapons in an internal bay, so you are wrong again. To say the Harrier GR9 and the carriers were better than what we are getting is laughable and stupid.

The USA has never been at war with a similarly equipped country, they have generally fought and lost/come to arrangements with much smaller nations. Good for China, I hope that the USA thinks twice in future about their global plans.
